Lucrarea II
Metempsihoza
Lucrarea II
This is a story about pain and a story about triumph.
Stray thoughts were roaming through his head, leaving a path of misery. He was in deep, piercing, pain. He worked a small time crook, scamming people for money. He was good at it too, it was the only thing he could do well. Then, he died. Some guy whose life savings he just stole shot him. He didn't even see it coming. Now he's a scientist, back in the 1960s. He was working for the Russian government, developing a new type of missile. It was the Cold War. Then, he died. Shot, yet again. All over again. Stabbed, decapitated, shot with arrows, bullets, even tortured to death. All those different personalities, and he was all of them. All that pain, all that regret, tearing through his mind.
It was his 16th life when it hit him. Reincarnation. Every time he died, he woke up as a different person. He tried to put a stop to it, but soon after he realised that it was impossible to put a stop to it. His life had no end. He'd spend centuries researching metempsychosis, jumping from life to life, looking for a way to put a stop his never ending pain, just to end up dying and waking up as a child, all over again, life after life. He found nothing, though. His search was for useless. He was blessed with the gift of immortality, and cursed at the same time.
And yet he was patient. He'd wait for his chance, an opportunity to escape the fate and find a way to live a normal life. Then, it happened. He was a young farmer, working his way into the rotten society of a country diseased by the Cold War. He didn't even see the truck coming. He looked at his red hands then at his legs. The bloody bone sticking out of the flesh was not very reassuring. He wasn't going to make it, and that was certain. He closed his eyes, ready to die and to be reborn again, but something was amiss.
Instead of a new body, he found himself in a seemingly infinite room, as he couldn't see any of the walls. All he could see was white. Infinite, pure white. He walked for days, amazed by his lack or thirst or hunger, but to no avail. That cursed place was infinite.
He roamed that place for days, never feeling tired, never feeling sleepy. But it was all for nothing. A normal man would have been insane by now, but not him, never him. He was stronger, a lot stronger than a normal human. His never ending stream of knowledge and experience kept him sane. Then, they showed up. Tall figures, as large as mountains, showed up right in his face. Their skin was ebony black and in their dark eyes you could read the entire universe. They looked old and wise. He was still in shock, and as they shrank down to his size, he couldn't even speak. As he snapped back into senses, he found enough strength to talk to them.
“Who are you?” he asked them, with fear in his voice. “Tell us, please, how many lives have you lived?” they asked him, all at once. Their voice had no gender, but it was strong and imposing. “24.116, 24.117 with this one.” he replied, still mesmerized by them. “What do you know about my immortality?” he asked as he found some strength left on the bottom of his soul. The figures looked impressed, as if he had said something of a greater importance than that. “Oh dear child, to answer all your questions, even those that you haven’t asked yet, it would take a long time. We are God. We are creators of this world, and many many others.” they replied, with warmth in their voice. “How can you all be God, I thought there was only a single, almighty God.” he asked them, as he shyly looked at his dirty shoes. “So wise and yet so much more left for him to learn.” one of them said as the others nodded in agreement. “We are all God.” they said in unison. “We created everything.” they added. He tried to make some sense of what they said, but he couldn’t. “I see. What does that have to do with me? Why am I immortal? Why am I the only immortal being out of 6 billion people?” he asked. The so-called Gods looked at the simple man in front of them with care and compassion. Even from a small glance one could tell they loved him.
"There are not 6 billion people out there, child. It's only you." the Gods added, staring deeply at the man in front of them. "You are alone on Earth." they added. He looked at them with curiosity and fear. "What do you mean ? How can I be alone when there are so many other human beings near me ?" he asked. "As we said, child, you are alone. They are you, and you are them. They are simple reincarnations. You have been every person on this planet. The man who killed you a week ago, the man who brings the newspaper, even the small child who died of hunger in Africa. It was only you. But we made a mistake. You were not supposed to remember your previous lives." the creatures added in unison again, with a slight trace of regret and sadness on their dark faces. "What do you mean a mistake ? I thought Gods never made mistakes. And how can I be every last one of the people on Earth ? I counted 24.177 reincarnations." he replied, still scared. "Child, everyone makes mistakes. It's something that you do, and it's what everyone does from time to time, even gods. And time, as you understand it, only exists in your universe. You will be every last one of the humans." they answered with sympathy. "Even Hitler ? he asked, amazed. "Yes, even Hitler. And all the people he has killed. Everytime you hurt someone, you hurt yourself. Everytime you help someone, you help yourself.", they answered. "But why would you do this, if I may ask ?". "The gods looked at him. "You're like us. In this entire place, and all the multitude of universes it's just you and us."
He couldn't even find enough energy to stand up. He knelt in front of them, staring at the harsh, yet loving faces. "You m-m-m-mean", he stuttered, "I'm a god ?" The entities stared back at him, as if they were thinking how to answer his question. "Not yet, you are not. You're still a fetus. Once you've lived every last life on Earth you will be mature enough to grow." they answered. “So what you mean is that this whole universe, is just ..." he said, on the verge of tears. "An egg, child. A simple egg." they completed. "But as we said, a small mistake was made. You shouldn't be able to remember your previous lives, you'll remember them only after you lived them all. We will fix that now." they replied, as they snapped their fingers in unison. "Come now, it's time for you to go back, you will be a soldier now. And don't worry, you won't remember any life from your past from now on."
